After the end of a meal in the Indian culture, do not thank your host. Saying "thank you" for a meal is insulting because the thanks are considered a form of payment. Returning the meal by inviting your hosts to dinner shows that you value the relationship.

About Betty R. Walton

Betty Walton

For the past 27 years, Betty R. Walton, M.A., CCC-SLP, has been practicing as a speech-language pathologist. Mrs. Walton graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G) with a B.A. in Speech Pathology and Audiology and earned a M.A. in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from Hampton Institute (University). She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association, and is licensed to practice in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Mrs. Walton is also a member of CORSPAN, an international organization that serves as a networking and support for corporate speech pathologists.

As President and Founder of Clear Speech Now, Mrs. Walton is skilled in all areas of communication, with special emphasis on accent modification training. Mrs. Walton has provided accent modification training for non-native English speaking persons from India, China, Hungary, Germany, Africa, Dominican Republic, Panama, El Salvador, Japan and Nepal.

Mrs. Walton has also provided services to pediatrics, adolescents, and adults in the educational, rehabilitative, home health care, long-term care, and corporate settings. She worked as a clinical supervisor in the department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Hampton University for 10 years where she supervised and trained undergraduate and graduate students in the practical application of clinical skills.

As one of the founders of the Peninsula Society for Autism, she has shared in developing the parent support group which continues to function.

Mrs. Walton collaborates with people from all different economic and social levels as a community volunteer. Her extensive travels to international conventions have afforded her the opportunity to visit and interact with people in the following countries: Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand, Beijing, China; Warsaw, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; Buenos Aries, Argentina; Montevideo, Uruguay; Vienna, Austria; Lucerne, Switzerland; and Seoul, Korea. Her experiences, both professionally and personally, have enhanced her expertise in all facets of communication.
